}The waves sigh, the wood creaks, and the rigging whines as you try to get some sleep on your first day out of port. You’re the captain of the good ship Die A Log (which is the last time you let Ash name anything). Its crew of four is you, the fearless leader and cunning diplomat; Ash, the pacing bundle of nerves; Bri, child of merchants and swashbuckler extraordinaire; and Cal, a bored engineer only entertained by explosions.

[[Take a look around your cabin]]
[[Go to sleep]]Your cabin is firmly on the broom closet end of captain’s quarters. Your clutter however, is firmly galleon-scale. While no dirty laundry is visible, as that would be quite the uncaptainlike indiscretion, piles of books and miscellaneous knick-knacks blot out any hints of flat surfaces. In this chaos you see
[[a shiny ledger]],
[[“Applying Multiple Affinities in the Real World,” a book]],
[[a grubby pamphlet peeking out from under your hammock]],
[[a sword]],
[[a bonsai tree]],
and [[an unsealed envelope]].
At some point you should [[go to sleep->Go to sleep]].You wake up and put on your most dashing outfit, buckling on a sword. A new captain must look the part, especially on the first day out of port. You [[walk out onto the deck]].{<style>

[[Put down the ledger->Take a look around your cabin]]An attempt at writing a fun and exciting treatise on Multiplicity, the strain of magic that manifested within you during your childhood. It begins with the usual disclaimer that Multiplicity is quite useless compared to the focus of Stillness or Action then descends into an unsubstantiated set of exercises designed to allow multis to dive to the same depth of communion as the serene Stills and brash Actives that run the world.
Over the course of the first chapter, your marginalia devolve from “Interesting! Better check that out” to “I’d rather drown myself than only talk to the sea for a year” and “I bet this author’s never had a nice chat with feldspar, no way they’re an actual multi.”
[[Put down the book->Take a look around your cabin]] The pamphlet features a photograph of a carefully diverse set of students having what appears to be a study-picnic in soon-to-be-ruined graduation gowns. The title, "Graduating into success," is plastered over this nonsensical picture in a garish font.
Inside the pamphlet, illustrations of conventionally successful people are interspersed with a saccharine sales pitch:
"Now that you’re done with your education, get to value creation by joining one of our affiliated guilds! Are you a savvy Still? Apply to the Naval Gazers! As you help out the royal navy money will roll in like the tide. If you’ve chosen metal as your mastery, become a part of the Martial Magicians and show enemies of the realm the fruit of your long nights spent studying. Unsure where to go? There’s always the Ardent Adventurers where many of our students support the kingdom through consultation and service."
[[Put down this trash->Take a look around your cabin]] It's a sword.
[[Take a look around your cabin]] Your pride and joy that somehow survived five years of neglect at the Academy.
[[Take a look around your cabin]] Pax, I sure hope you were serious about that pirate thing. I was bored out of my mind playing accountant for my parents when I saw that they think their competitors are shipping a small, highly valuable artifact from Sivera to Goldport two months from now. They’re liquidating their assets to prepare for the financial shitstorm this will cause but I had a better idea. A bit of research and “research” later I have some very interesting information (and a minor bounty on my head in Viven). Two words: Eclipse Heist. Gather a crew and meet me in Sivera for the opportunity of a lifetime.
Bri
[[Put it down->Take a look around your cabin]] Bri pauses in their drill to talk to you. Smiling, they say, “Hey Pax, I’m glad you could get the gang together. I was worried we’d never see eachother again after graduation. It’s nice to catch up, although I am a little disappointed that you hadn’t gathered a whole pirate crew.”
“Oh come on Bri, you should know I have built up deep pirate contacts these last two months. You saw the deal that we got on the good ship Die A Log. Admittedly the used ship salesperson’s good mood was due to an odd job I did for them last week, but that’s really a minor detail when you’re as respected by the Sivera Scallywags as I am.”
“Is that really what they call themse--nevermind. I bow before your illegal nautical prowess, my captain.” Bri gestures to the sword at your belt. “Is that thing just for show or would you care to help me brush up on the finer points of stabbing?”
[[Yes (Take a few hours to practice with them)]]
[[Maybe later->walk out onto the deck]] You rush over to Cal, trying to get a sense of the no-doubt-horrific damage being inflicted upon your beautiful iron splurge.
Out of breath, you stumble through the sentence before uprighting yourself and speaking with the dignity proper for a captain. “Cracked ice and dead ember do you have any idea how much that cost! As the absolute authority here and the only person between you and the depths of the ocean explain yourself or get planked”
Cal looks at you quizzically.
You correct yourself. “Or be forced to walk the plank.”
“This new model has so many inefficiencies though! You might not have the depth required to understand it as a multi but take a look at this sealwork,” Cal gesture at the plate they just tore out of the cannon’s base. “Uh no offense. But look, you can see that any motion I transfer into this iron will just seep out the edges of the channels here and here. If I just engrave [[a new sigil]] here,” you wince as Cal scrapes the oh-so-expensive plate, “it will take that extra energy and make for a bigger, better boom.”
[[Offer to help Cal]]
[[Leave them to it->walk out onto the deck]]You find Ash in the ship’s hold cataloguing and organizing your limited supplies for this brief excursion.
Without any noticeable pause in their work, Ash begins speaking to you, “Captain, as you’ve likely heard on the way in I’ve noted that we need to oil the hatch in here. That is unless you’re planning on using it to detect intruders, in which case I applaud your ingenuity. I’ve completed my initial survey of our food and water and noticed that if we get becalmed for more than a week we’ll have to go to quarter rations if we want any chance of surviving.”
They continue without any regard to the flow of breath or conversation, “Being from the most noble house of Rae I am a miracle worker but even a Still of my caliber has limits. Oh, speaking of miracles, I was working on a new technique but Cal said they were tired of fishing me out of the ocean so I need a replacement. Do you have the time to help?”
[[Technique?]]
[[Maybe later->walk out onto the deck]]
You practice with Bri for a few hours. It's clear that Bri, unlike you, has been keeping sharp since the Academy. While you never come close to beating Bri, they never stop smiling during the hours of sparring. You haven't been this exhausted for a while but you feel accomplished and dangerous, as a pirate captain should be.

[[Neat->Talk to Cal]] Cal doubts your dedication to the cause and general engineering abilities. “Are you sure? I guess I could use a pair of hands”
[[Take a few hours to help them tinker]]
[[On second thought the captain is above this nerdy nonsense->walk out onto the deck]]On the deck, you pause to give the ship’s cat Fay a scritch. Before you, you see Bri swinging a sword around in a series of drills and Cal dismantling the very fancy cannon you spent the last of your savings on.

Cal stands up and walks away.
(if: $morning_choice is 'cal')[ [[Keep being Cal's brainless fetching (and fetching) assistant]]]
(else:)[ [[Help Cal do...something to the cannon]]]
Cal barely registers your presence, only remembering you exist when they need a tool from the hold. On your way to get a #5 etcher you notice Ash beginning to reorganize Cal's tool bin. To avert that catastrophe you chase them away with a broom and threats of keelhauling before returning to the deck.
Over the course of the next few hours you witness Cal tear down and rebuild the cannon. From their muttering you gather that they've increased the efficiency and stopping power of the cannon at least twelvefold but you were too busy trying not to fall asleep out of boredom to really follow the process.
[[Praise wave and glacier, it's finally time to eat->lunch]]
(set: $morning_choice to "cal")“Oh that will soon be clear. If not I can start sorting our tools and munitions, Cal loved when I did that in the Academy.”
[[Okay Ash, I’ll help you, just don’t antagonize Cal]]
[[Maybe later->walk out onto the deck]]"Thank you so much, Captain Pax!" Ash beams.
"It's no problem, anything to help a member of my crew!" you reply.
"Anyway, follow me up to the deck and I'll explain what I'm trying to pull off," they say, producing a faded life preserver from a crate.
"Since the Academy I've been wondering what I can do outside of what's expected from me. I enjoyed the praise but going from place to place just to do the same exact thing got old quickly. There has to be more to life than just ship go fast and rain go sploosh," they sigh.
"Anyway, enough of that. I need your help because my new technique requires the open water and I don't really want to be swept away and drown. If I still the water under my feet I can stand on it like a platform but I'm having trouble maintaining it for more than a few seconds. Unfortunately when I discovered this at the estate and tried to practice my parents assigned a servant even more overprotective than they. That unhelpful sod refused to let me get a feel for when the stillness is about to break because 'getting wet would ruin Your Serenity's clothing and countenance'"
"Long story short just throw this," they hand you the life preserver, "at me when I shout 'circle'. I'll be over there, thanks!" Ash gestures at a rope hanging into the water from the sail.
[[Welp]]
(set: $morning_choice to "ash")You watch Ash descend the rope and gather themselves for a second before they jump down onto the waves.
A small circle of Stilled water appears around Ash and they miraculously stand above the waves. Vibrating with joy, they wheel around and wave at you. Off balance from the rotation they stagger and the circle flickers.
[[Oh no! Pull them up!]]
[[Continue watching]]Ash recovers and beams even brighter, nodding in approval as they go back to concentrating on maintaining the water's Stillness.
The waves continue to roll around Ash, their platform standing solid against the rise and fall.
A couple more seconds pass and the platform begins to flicker but Ash is deep in concentration, lost to the world.

[[Just keep watching]]Ash's eyes snap wide open as the platform disappates and they fall into the rolling sea. Uh oh.

Over the next few hours Cal's continued cannon tinkering appears to add the ability for the cannon to fire cutlery and other improvised ammunition. You hope it hasn't done any lasting damage.
[[Okay then->dinner]]You continue helping out Ash with their practice.
After fishing them out of the water for the eighth time something occurs to you. Motioning them to stop you suggest, "You know Ash, it seems like you're only Stilling the ocean when you stand on it."
"Of course, Captain. All I do is water, that's the way it's been and will always be. As excellent as I am at youthful rebellion I choose my battles. I'm not a multi like you."
"Okay okay, hear me out. Have you considered Stilling yourself? We're made up of water, just like the ocean. Shift your perspective a bit and you can double your efficiency."
"Wow, they sure taught you some weird things at the Academy when you weren't busy being kicked out of class. I guess I'll give it a try, thanks Pax--I mean Captain."

As you draw level with the rowboard Bri leaps over and you follow to the best of your ability.
Luckily, only two guards greet you on the rowboat, the clerk-looking person cowering in the corner. You stab at the one nearest you, locking them in a duel. Clashing steel becomes your world for the next minute as you try your best to not die. You hear a triumphant yell from Bri and their guard topples into the water. You lower your guard and sit back to let Bri handle the clerk when that unassuming rat bastard draws a sword. Their first slash pushes back Bri and their second one is aimed at you. You raise your guard too slowly and your sword hand is replaced with a searing pain.
You pass out and awaken back on the ship. "Hey, you're awake. Sorry about that," Bri says, surprisingly sheepish considering their recent murderous escapades. "I got the artifact from the brigantine. Job's done, Captain."

You make your way across the bridge swaying above the waves. Ash greets you on the other side, giddy with excitement.
It seems like the brigantine's crew hasn't bothered lighting torches yet and is just waiting for their eyes to adjust. You motion Ash to stay hidden above deck while you and Bri take advantage of this laziness to [[sneak below->sneak below deck]].Navigating the brigantine's corridors comes naturally to Bri as they lead you to the hold. Bri knocks out a guard on the door in one swift movement before you can even start coming up with a plan.
"You're pretty good at this," you whisper while you're sorting through the hold.

"There's something I have to do before I go. Just wait topside and don't get in the way."

]You follow Bri down the passage. They peak out from behind a corner just as a crewmember emerges from the door behind you.
Your panicked pommel strike stifles the cry for help but the damage is done. Guards flood in from both ends of the corridor.
The first guard falls in a flash of steel from Bri. They flex their grasp of Motion that kept them at the top of the Academy's dueling club, cutting down guard after guard. You just try to survive, using your affinity with wood to surprise one guard as the floor buckles underneath them.
Bri's efforts clear a path to the ornate door at the end of the hall. They kick it open, revealing a terrified clerk gathering money from a safe in the corner. "Sorry Mel, it's just business," Bri says before stabbing them through the heart, "Let's go."
Shoving away the last guard before pinning them to the wall with some well-placed splinters you agree, [["Yes, let's."]]Head spinning, you go topside, leaving Bri to their fate. You hear screams and a commotion before Bri emerges, drenched in blood.
"Please worry, nearly all of this is mine," they say before collapsing on the deck. "Here, take this. I completed my goal so I'll finish my job for you too," they hand you the small box containing the artifact before closing their eyes forever.
Spying some lamp oil, you douse the deck and ignite it. A fitting pyre for a friend.

Topside, you finally relax. You're a professional pirate complete with a daring crew and a dashing coat. That's when you hear a grunt to your side. You try to guard but you're too slow. The sensation in your sword hand is replaced by searing pain.
Bri rushes up from behind you and slices open the guard.
They look at your stump. "Hey Pax, stay with me. We'll get you a nice hook when this is all over and you'll be fine. Okay?" they say, mustering a weak smile.
You give as much of a nod as you can and allow Bri to guide you onto the rowboat and [[back to the ship->wrapup]].

Now in the clear for real, you yell, "I have the best crew!" gathering Ash and the stunned Bri into an ill-advised group hug.
"But not the best understanding of how to use cannons in heists!" Cal shouts from somewhere in the inky black of the eclipse.
